Papadopoulos & Sons – guerrilla marketing Greek-style

What would you do if you were suddenly plunged into financial ruin?

There can be few of us who havent stopped to consider that thought over the last couple of years, and particularly those who have been affected by the recent problems in Cyprus. Its also theme of a new film, due to be screened at Cineworld later this week.

4Marcus Markou’s Papadopoulos & Sons tells the story of a self-made Greek immigrant millionaire who reluctantly re-unites with his estranged freewheeling brother to re-open the abandoned fish and chip shop they shared in their youth. It’s strictly ‘feel-good’, the premise, ‘only when you lose everything do you find it all’.

Markou has self financed and self distributed the film, which is being shown in selected cinemas for just one week.  After that, unless it’s very successful, you may have lost your chance.

Industry insiders have described the strategy as mad, but you can help provide them wrong, says Markou: the secret is guerilla marketing, Greek style.

For every Greek in the UK – just the title Papadopoulos & Sons – makes this film an event. I’m not saying that this film only appeals to Greek immigrants and their handsome offspring. Far from it. This is a fairy tale with universal family values and a feel good factor. But whilst the film can and does appeal to non-Greeks for the purpose of my cinema release I am exclusively targeting their joy. It’s our film. It’s about us. It’s our big moment on the big screen – with a lovely story, some wonderful music, some excellent performances. It’s our event.

The call has gone out to all the Greeks I know. And I have asked them to forward the rallying call to all the Greeks they know. The marketing strategy is simple. Greeks know Greeks. We will be targeting Greek churches and community halls, Greek businesses, Greek Facebook groups and anything Greek.

To book tickets for the Enfield showing at Cineworld this Friday 5 April – including a pre  screening Q&A with Markou about the film – click here http://www.cineworld.co.uk/whatson/6158?cinema=22&date=all. And tell all your friends.

Laiki’s UK customers escape levy

The BBC and national newspapers are reporting this afternoon that 15,000 UK customers who have accounts in credit at the UK arm of the Laiki Bank will escape the bank levy being imposed in Cyprus.

Laiki has four branches in the UK, including the flagship branch at 246 Green Lanes, which saw long queues in mid March. Laiki had sought to reassure UK customers that their deposits were safe and this now appears to be confirmed. Customers who are concerned or wish to discuss their personal circumstances to should contact their branch for further  information.

Under the EU bail-out, Laiki and other bank’s customers in Cyprus stand to lose 60% of any deposits greater than 100,000 Euros. However, reports say that UK customer’s deposits have been moved from the Laiki bank to the Bank of Cyprus which, because it is fully registered as a UK subsidiary, is covered by the UK compensation scheme.

The Empire on the ‘ill, was a rough old gaff – still

….it meant a lot to the locals of Edmonton Green. A little Chas and Dave to take us into Easter weekend.

Chas Hodges was born in Edmonton in December 1943 and Rockney partner in crime Dave Peacock in Enfield in 1945, growing up in Ponders End and Freezywater.

In Edmonton Green, Hodges pays tribute to the old shopkeepers and characters long gone – Tubby Isaacs’ takeaway, ‘the old boy sellin’ taters in old newspapers…for a penny’. It finishes with a rather risqué and non pc bit at the end about picking up old bags, which I regret to inform you are not references to Keep Britain Tidy.

Still, its Chas & Dave innit.

And another thing – new local debating forum launches

enfield debatersA new debating group holds its inaugural meeting next month.

Organised by Winchmore Hill’s Sharon Nayyar, Enfield Debaters aims to provide a friendly and sociable environment  in which local people can meet up to share their thoughts and ideas. The aim  is to provide a forum for challenge, debate and collaboration.

The topics for the first debate are

  • Are men now the fairer, weaker sex? Discuss
  • The Housing Benefit Cap is for the greater good. It will encourage people to return to work and should be welcomed by Enfield. Discuss

Nothing controversial there then!

Artist auctions work for Southgate’s Space gallery

bo2Do you want to own something special and unique?

Acclaimed Danish artist, poet and librettist Bo Gorzelak Pedersen is auctioning artwork on eBay this week to help support the work of the Space Art Gallery in Southgate. Space is a not-for-profit collaboration between Fionn Wilson (artist) and Gosia Stasiewicz (photographer) in premises formerly occupied by a bank on Southgate High Street– temporary because the landlords have made the space available while they are looking for a long-term tenant.

If you havent been to Space, you just have time to catch the wonderful exhibition by Ross Ashmore, the artist currently on a mission to paint all of London Underground’s stations before the 150 anniversary celebrations later this year.

Pedersen was one of the first artists to be featured at the gallery following its opening in January and has been a staunch supporter of Space. The gallery is entirely run by volunteers and has an impressive programme running into 2014 which would put many top central London galleries to shame.

To view the artworks up for auction, visit http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/gorzelak/m.html. But hurry, its excellent stuff and bidding is ending soon on some items.
