In his book “Old Southgate” published in 1949, Herbert W Newby tells of Mr Gudgeon, who, though completely blind, earned his living by filling a barrel on wheels with water from a spring in Grovelands Park, and supplying it to his neighbours on Bourne Hill at a penny a pail
